Chinese rhubarb, or da huang, is one of the oldest healing plants used in Chinese medicine. In China and Korea, rhubarb extracts have been used traditionally to prevent and treat conditions like ulcers, cancer, fever, headaches, toothaches and certain liver problems.2. Da Huang Herb (Chinese Rhubarb root); also called Rheum Palmatum; Radix et Rhizoma Rhei. Rhubarb root is sour and bitter in taste, and cooling in action. It is a stimulant laxative that drains inflammation from the liver, large intestine and kidney.
3. Chinese rhubarb contains anthraquinones, stilbenes, and tannins. The anthraquinones occur as glycosides and have been identified as aloe emodin, chrysophanol, emodin, and rhein. Other substances include phenolics (such as catechin, gallic acid, and glucogallin) and sennosides A,B,and C.
4. SAFETY ISSUES: Do not use during pregnancy or nursing. Do not use with bowel obstruction or gout. Do not use in cases of severe deficiency. Do not use long term. Use only under supervision with inflammatory bowel disease. Long-term use can cause hypertrophy of the liver, thyroid and stomach, as well as nausea, griping, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea .
